A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
By the time children leave Meadows they will:-
- Have an understanding of their own locality (town and county) in relation to the rest of the United Kingdom.
- They will have examined selected features of their own locality, its physical and human features and how it may have changed over time. This will include maps and aerial photographs of the local and wider community.
- Have taken part in fieldwork studying a local area near to the school.
- Understand there are 4 countries that make up the United Kingdom, with their own history and heritage.
- Know the location of the United Kingdom in relation to the European continent, and it’s relative position on a world map.
- Have studied a selection of other countries and cultures.
- Have been taught how to use a globe and world atlas, to locate other countries and geographical features.
- Understand that maps use a range of scales.
- Use appropriate geographical vocabulary.
- Have used secondary sources of information such as books, the internet, photographs and videos to further their learning.
- Have used appropriate fieldwork techniques and instruments.
- Have been taught place names of continents, oceans, countries, capital cities, rivers etc, in the context of studying what places are like.
- Have been taught geographical questioning skills, why, what and who?
- Have used ICT to help in geographical study and investigations e.g. google earth.
- Have been taught how man impacts the natural environment, including studies on pollution.
